Counter made from recycled glass offers new look.Just in case you’ve run out of ideas for the countertop in your next house or a counter of some kind in a commercial building there’s always glass. Come to think of it there is something attractive about glass and having it as a countertop seems like a cool idea.

Vetrazzo has a patented way to reuse old beer bottles (it’s good that they’re old), broken windows and even discarded traffic lights to make some pretty attractive counters. The new (old) material is becoming popular enough that the company has recently expanded its distribution network.

The counters use 550 pounds of recycled glass each and it is hoped this will be one step in the right direction toward cutting back on the use of less renewable resources. The company makes a point to emphasize that all the material and labor is supplied by the US. Since the process of making these results in a random display of the glass pieces no two are alike. With names like Alehouse Amber (beer bottles), Bistro Green (pickle jars, olive oil containers…), Charisma Blue (recycled beverage bottles) and Firehouse Red (factory wasted red glass goblets) you can make a statement about more than just your taste.

The glass is combined with a patented formula of cement, additives, pigments and recycled material like fly ash. It can be used outdoors too. If you are a DIYer you’re out of luck though. The countertops are not sold to homeowners and they have to be custom manufactured and installed by the “fabricator.”
