miglin It’s always a treat to come across a building effort where you can see lots of pictures in progress and watch as it is built. So it is with the Miglin Properties/Staybridge Suites going up in Chicago. This one is billed as the only staggered steel truss framing system in the windy city.

Structural Affiliates International did the engineering and according to reports the firm has a lot of experience with staggered steel truss design. The benefits of this building technique include offsite assembly of the major structural components, lightweight components, a system that erects floor and ceiling support in one motion, open floor design opportunities and quick construction. Now, who wouldn’t want a building like that? Valerio Dewalt Train Associates are the architects and principal David Jennerjahn described the effort this way in a Building Design and Construction article:

“It’s the first building we did with a staggered truss system. We had this basic system, and we wanted to be creative with it while still being structurally responsible.”

There are three levels of parking topped by 13 residential floors. There will also be retail space on the first level. There are many pictures along with construction detail drawings and a live webcam at the American Institute of Steel Construction site.
