While many of the nation’s youth spend their hormone-driven spring break on beaches, and in bars and nightclubs, there are others who find some excitement in building.

Each year, according to Habitat for Humanity, 12,000 students spend their spring break volunteering in more than 200 locations across the country. In Habitat’s 20-year history 166,000 of these young people have participated in the spring break event.

Students who use their school breaks to build with Habitat for Humanity are making a powerful statement about the need for affordable housing and the ability of young people to create positive change. They are also making a real difference for families all over the United States, one house at a time, said Desiree Adaway, Habitat’s senior director of Volunteer Mobilization.

In Miami this year 200 students from high schools and colleges in MD, ND, WV, WI, and Canada will work on eight houses in one of the largest Habitat communities in the nation. If they’re clever though, a few of them might sneak away for some surf time after a hot day of building. I know I would.
