There are no doubt many contractors in the Columbia Pike, Virginia area that are reaping the awards that come with affordable housing projects. One such company, HITT Contracting Inc. recently completed structural concrete and topped out the Arlington Mill Community Center, in Arlington, Virginia. side of the garage, which will serve as the pedestal for a future 122-unit multifamily project for the Arlington Partnership for Affordable Housing. Completion of the Arlington Mill Community Center and garage is slated for July 2013. This development is one of several Arlington County projects transforming the corridor along Columbia Pike.

The five-story community center will feature a full size gymnasium, multi-purpose class rooms, multi-purpose rooms, a tot playground, and will offer 1,840 s.f. of future retail space, overlooking an outdoor public plaza. The complex is adjacent to an existing park and Four Mile Run, which features a series of multi-purpose trails.

The project was designed by Davis Carter Scott Ltd to meet LEED®Silver certification for New Construction. Sustainable features include a rain harvesting cistern, green roof, low flow fixtures, and abundant regional landscaping. The project team includes: Arlington County Department of Environmental Services (Owner); Davis Carter Scott Ltd (Architect); O’Donnell & Naccarato (Structural Engineer); Jordan & Scala (MEP Engineer); Lewis Scully Gionet (Landscape Architect); VIKA Inc (Civil Engineer); Schnabel Engineering Consultants, Inc. (Geotechnical Engineer); and, AECOM (Commissioning Agent).
